Featured services at Stibbard methodists church

Our Centenary year began on May 1st with the Launch of our website. Daniel from Church Website Design Project had encouraged, supported and nagged us and then collated, sorted and created. Finally he came to present the website to us and the community of people who support us.

Our Centenary Service on May 2nd was led by Rev. Rosemary Wakelin and we were pleased to welcome friends from the village, the Parish Church and around the Circuit. We were particularly pleased to have Liz Lodge play one of her own compositions, With Thanksgiving, on the piano.

The Harvest Service, on October 10th, was led by Rev. Nicholas Varnon, whom we have met through our joint ‘Lent and beyond’ study evenings. This was followed on Tuesday 12th by a most enjoyable Harvest Supper in the Village Hall.

Circuit Songs of Praise

This was a very special evening, particularly for Pippa, who was conducting the Circuit Choir for the first time. Thursford Museum, home to a collection of fairground organs and traction engines, has for many years hosted a Songs of Praise for the Fakenham, Wells and Holt Circuit. 2010 saw the beginning of the Central Norfolk Circuit, an amalgamation of FWH and the Mid-Norfolk Circuit, and this was its first Songs of Praise. Pam Rhodes compèred the evening and Rev. Andrew King, the Superintendant Minister was the speaker. The hymns were accompanied by Fakenham Town Band with their conductor, Danny Wakefield, also playing the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. The soloist was Kyra Poole and there were items from the Circuit Choir and the Hindringham Male Voice Choir. It was an evening which fulfilled its title Let’s Celebrate!

Our Remembrance weekend began with an illustrated talk by Nelson Tubby entitled From Normandy to Berlin. The Village Service of Remembrance was held in the Methodist Church Centre and was followed by an Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial.

This year we held an informal concert in The Centre. Those who performed were Liz Lodge, playing one of her own compositions, The Jones family from Dereham, who played piano solos and sang together, and Sarah King who played flute solos. The Friends in Consort recorder group also played – in fact the whole audience contributed by singing carols and playing the various percussion instruments provided!

The Village Carol Service was held in the Parish Church when the lessons were read by members of village organisations. It was led by Canon Dennis Rider who is ‘standing in’ for Veronica while she takes adoption leave.

Fascinating Faith

The proposed Lent Course of 2010 became a joint venture between the Foulsham Group of Parishes, of which Stibbard is a member, the Elmham Group of Parishes, and the Methodist Church in Stibbard. It then went on to develop into Fascinating Faith,  which has continued on a monthly basis. It has included a very thoughtful and moving Taizé evening, and discussions on aspects of Christian Faith, mostly led by Rev. Nicholas Varnon from North Elmham.
